I think J.S. Bach consistently found the best balance of the features I mentioned in Philosophy. I also like Dieterich Buxtehude and Giovanni Gabrielli; then I have a whole laundry list of favorite Romantic composers: Brahms, Dvorak, Elgar, Grieg, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven. I love the passion and character of the Romantic period and the ornate and intricate music of the High Baroque. And I’ve always had a soft spot for Scott Joplin and ragtime. My favorite twentieth century composers include Dmitri Shostakovich and Zoltán Kodály.
